Light control is more than keeping glare down or when watching television or working at a desk near a window, though these maybe important issues for some. Light control has to do with reducing the amount of harmful UV rays from bright sunlight, which will harm fabrics, furnishings, and artwork in your home. Bright full sunlight will quickly fade your upholstery, rugs, discolor you hardwood floors and over time will breakdown some fibers causing them to rot. Window coverings can successfully be used to control light.

When shopping for window coverings to control light, consider these options:

Any opaque window treatment can help control light, however, since sunlight will eventually break down many fabrics, it will be helpful to use a non-fabric shade next to the glass. When purchasing custom made draperies consider using special linings, which have been treated to help reduce UV damage.
If you need a room, such as a bedroom fully darkened, then consider light-blocking treatments. You can purchase room darkening roller shades, blinds, and shade blinds
as well as draperies.
All vertical blinds can be tilted to keep out direct sunlight from your room, while permitting some view and light.
Bamboo, matchstick and other natural blinds will filter out light while cutting down on glare. Many styles can also be ordered with an exterior lining for privacy.
Non-sheer cellular shades will cut down on light.
For rooms with extremely strong sunlight, consider window tinting. This is where a film is attached directly to the window, reducing harmful UV rays and is available
in several degrees of tint.
