Blinds
Window blinds are
coverings for windows, which generally attached
to the interior side of the windows.
There are two main groups
of blinds, slat blinds and solid blinds and each
group contain several types of blinds. Let's
first look at slat blinds.
Slat blinds are made of many horizontal or
vertical, flat slats, which are usually metal,
vinyl, or wood and are connected with string in
such a way that the blinds can be rotated open
or closed to allow as much or as little light to
enter a room. To rotate open the blinds, simple
twist the connector that is attached to the
strings, or if the blinds are operated on a
pulley system, simple pull the cord. The raising
and lowering of the blinds is achieved by
pulling a separate cord. Slat blinds
include: Venetian blinds, which were introduced
around 1770. They are basic slatted blind made
of metal or plastic, or wood. However, wooden
slats are usually referred to as wood blinds and
not Venetian blinds. Mini blinds are Venetian
blinds with
slats that are usually 1? wide, micro mini
blinds are usually ½ inch wide.
Vertical blinds are slate blinds, which have
increased in popularity in the past few years.
Some times these will be referred to as track
blinds. They are made up of vertical slats of a
stiffened fabric, plastic, or metal, which are
hung by one end from a track. Like horizontal
blinds, the slates of vertical blinds can be
rotated a full 90 degrees to permit as much or
as little light into the room, or the blinds can
be fold up to one side of the door or window to
allow a full view of the outdoors.
The next group is the Solid blinds. They can
either roll up or fold up but cannot be opened
in place to allow light into a room. Solid
blinds, which are also referred to as window
shades include: Holland blinds also known as
roller shades that are
pull-down rolling window blinds.
Decorative woven-wood blinds are slats of wood,
bamboo, or other natural material, which has
been woven together to make an almost perfectly
solid blind. Woven-wood blinds can be roll up
out to allow as much or as little light and view
or rolled down to block all the light and view
from the outside.
Pleated shades are pleated fabric blinds, which
when are pull up, the folds of fabric sits flat
at the top of a window. Honeycomb shades, or
cellular shades are very similar to pleated
shades in how they operate. The difference is
that these shades are constructed of two or more
layers of fabric, which are joined at the pleats
to form honeycomb shaped compartments, which
trap air and provide insulation against
the cold.
Roman shades are constructed of fabric or woven
wood and are raised and lowered by having each
section of the shade fold behind a higher
section of the blind.
